Overview

The process of getting a new natural gas line can be challenging. To help simplify the process, Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) has prepared step-by-step guidelines covering the important milestones involved in establishing new gas service. Following this five step process will keep your service request moving smoothly and is the best way to ensure that your new gas service is completed on-time and to your satisfaction.

Step 1 - Application

Apply at least 10 to 12 weeks before you need the gas line and meter installed.

Step 2 - Planning (15 - 20 Work Days)

A SoCalGas planning representative will plan your project and contact you for site-specific details.Several topics will be covered including:

  • Trenching
  • Meter location
  • Equipment and load requirements
  • Easement or right of way issues
  • Other construction related items

Tariff compliance and allowance calculation concerns may be elevated at this point.

Step 3 - Contract (10 - 15 Work Days)

A Line Extension contract will be generated for your project based upon your load needs and site specifications. Line Extension Contracts have several key time milestones that are important to remember.

0 Day Contract Generate Date - Start Clock
90 Days Contract voided if not signed or paid
180 Days     Work must start within 90 days of Contract Signed Date
365 Days       Construction Contract must be completed within one year of Contract Signed Date

Meter Set Timeline

  • Ready to Serve Date – Starts Timeline Clock
    • Main Projects – six months to set meters to earn allowance
    • Service Projects – 12 months to set meters to earn allowance

Contract Reconciliation Timeline

  • Ready to Serve Date – Starts Timeline Clock
    • Residential– 12 months
    • Non-Residential – 36 months
    • Main Refund – up to 10 years to receive series refunds

Step 4 - Construction (varies by project)

Once the contract is signed, payment is posted (if required) and all other pre-requisites are satisfied (permitting, easements, etc.) your project will be scheduled immediately or as requested. Be sure to have the service trenching ready at least one day prior to construction to avoid any delays or additional costs. When completed, the gas line is ready for service.

To conclude this step, obtain a final houseline inspection by a city inspector.

Step 5 - Meter Installation (5 - 10 Work Days)

After a final houseline inspection, call to schedule your meter installation and appliance turn on at:

  • 1-800-427-2200 (Residential)
  • 1-800-427-2000 (Commercial)

Timely meter installation is critical for Line Extension Contract compliance.
