Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas®) customers in many industry segments have successfully made the switch to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles in their fleets. Here are just a few examples:
Refuse and Street Sweeping
Refuse collection and street sweeping trucks can yield very low MPG ratings due to their extreme start and stop duty cycle. Compared to diesel, CNG-powered refuse trucks can deliver greatly reduced fuel costs. As a result, the largest refuse collection companies in the U.S. have already converted large portions of their fleets to CNG. Natural gas refuse trucks also operate up to 90 percent more quietly--a significant benefit in densely populated areas. CNG-powered street sweeper can enjoy similar benefits from this abundant, domestic fuel source.
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is the second largest school district in the country. They have already replaced hundreds of diesel-powered buses with new buses that run on clean-burning, affordable CNG. These buses have been a big hit with drivers, parents and staff. Grants at the federal and state levels enabled LAUSD as well as several smaller school districts in the SoCalGas service area to make the switch to CNG more quickly and affordably.

The advent of larger engines, increased on-board fuel capacity and an improved interstate fueling infrastructure have created a confluence of factors that make heavy-duty trucks one of today’s fastest growing CNG market segments. National food manufacturers, trucking companies, parcel shippers, retailers and rental fleets have all begun rapidly switching to CNG for their Class 8 tractors and other heavy-duty vehicles.
Large fleets operating around the clock result in high fuel consumption, making transit buses ideal for CNG power. Los Angeles Metro operates the largest alternative fuel fleet in North America. One hundred percent of their fleet, more than 2,200 buses, are powered by CNG. In 2011, Metro completed one billion miles of passenger service. Most major transit agencies in Southern California have also adopted CNG, making it one of the most successful uses of the technology in the SoCalGas service territory.
Taxis and Shuttles
Most taxis tend to have high annual fuel use, so the spike in gasoline prices in recent years created a significant financial burden on taxi fleets and owner-operators. Fortunately, CNG-powered taxis in Southern California have been in use for years. CNG-powered shuttle buses operate in a variety of applications, from airport and parking shuttles to universities, major theme parks and other attractions.
