Stay Safe and Save This Winter

In order to keep your natural gas appliances operating safely and efficiently, it's important to perform regular maintenance and promptly make any repairs. Below are appliance safety and maintenance tips to help keep you safe and your appliances working properly.
Manage Higher Bills
In colder weather, customers may experience an increase in natural gas usage and utility bills. Learn about other factors that could raise your monthly bill, along with tips and tools to help you manage it.
Range & Oven Safety
Never use your oven, range top or outdoor barbecue to heat your home because these appliances are not designed for this purpose and can pose a safety hazard. Keep range, oven and broiler top areas clean of grease as it is flammable, and excessive build-up may result in a fire. Also, never install aluminum foil in the oven or range top. This can restrict exhaust vents which can result in carbon monoxide poisoning.

Furnace Safety
Replace your furnace filters at least three times during each heating season or as often as the manufacturer recommends.

Carbon Monoxide
Have your gas appliances inspected regularly by a qualified state-licensed professional at least every year, or as often as the manufacturer recommends. Not performing regular maintenance may result in inefficient appliance operation, and in some cases, dangerous exposure to carbon monoxide.

Saving Tips That Could Help You Save Money
- Have your air ducts tested for leaks and repair to save up to 30% on heating and cooling costs.
- Help save money on water heating costs by washing and rinsing your clothes in cold water.
- Save up to 10% on heating costs by lowering your furnace thermostat by 5-8 degrees, if health permits.
- Take shorter hot showers.
- Clean or replace your furnace filters according to manufacturer recommendations.
- Install proper caulking and weather-stripping to help seal your home and reduce drafts, keeping heat inside during winter.
- Fix leaky faucets and pipes. Hot water leaks can increase demand on your water heater, which in turn raises natural gas use.
Actual savings obtained in each instance may vary and will depend on various factors, including geographic location, weather conditions, equipment installed, usage rates and so forth. Completing multiple energy-saving measures will not necessarily result in cumulative savings.
