SoCalGas Smart Therm Program Frequently Asked Questions

Each winter, SoCalGas implements the SoCalGas® Smart Therm Program, a program which has the goal of reducing natural gas usage on certain days when SoCalGas' natural gas system reliability is anticipated to be at peak usage.  Customers who enroll in the Smart Therm Program will receive a notification alert through their thermostat1. Additional details can be found below. You may also receive a notification via a smart thermostat app, or via email from the manufacturer of your thermostat.

What is the SoCalGas Smart Therm Program?

The SoCalGas Smart Therm Program is established pursuant to an arrangement between our company and various smart thermostat providers. Through this program, you will have the potential to save money by reducing your usage and receiving a participation incentive. About 44,000 customers from last winter’s program will be returning to the program and will receive $25 for staying in the program this winter season. If you are new to the program, you will receive a $50 incentive for enrolling and an additional $25 for staying enrolled from December 1 through April 1.

The current enrollment cycle is closed. A new enrollment cycle will be announced December 1, 2019. Please check back here for more information. Enrolled customers will be automatically rolled over into the next winter season and will receive $25 for their continued participation.

How does the program work?

You must register the thermostat in the program through the thermostat provider’s website.  When a 4-hour Smart Therm event is called, most customers will be notified about 10-12-hours prior to the event, and the thermostat will be adjusted by up to 4 degrees during the 4-hour event. Events will only be called between 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. or 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Smart Therm event notifications are sent to participants through their thermostat, smart phone app and/or email. These events will only be called on weekdays, excluding Federal holidays.
 

Will participating in the program negatively impact my home’s comfort?

By participating in the program, you are signing up for brief, limited adjustments to be made to your home’s thermostat during Smart Therm events. These adjustments will only affect the temperature of your home by a few degrees, which should have minimal impact on comfort. You may opt out of an event at any time and for any reason, and it will not impact your enrollment in the program.
 

What are the participation qualifications?

To be eligible for the program, you must:
  • Own a wi-fi enabled thermostat that can be enrolled into the program1 and connected to a wireless network
  • Have an active SoCalGas account in a currently occupied residential dwelling unit
  • Provide your SoCalGas service address in the program application
  • Have an active Advanced Meter2 installed at your SoCalGas service address
  • Have a natural gas furnace
  • Not be enrolled in the "SoCalGas Advanced Meter Opt-Out Program"
  • Have obtained all necessary consents to accept terms or join the program (e.g., from a landlord if the terms of your lease)
     

What are the participation qualifications?

During the 2018-2019 winter season participation incentive, new participants submitted their enrollment application through their smart thermostat manufacturer by March 1st, 2019 to receive $75 at winter.


When will I receive my incentive check?

You will receive your enrollment $50 check within 4-8 weeks following your initial enrollment. Additionally, you will receive your $25 participation incentive 4-8 weeks following the conclusion of the winter period which is April 1, 2019. What if, after enrolling, I decide to no longer participate?

You may terminate participation in an event anytime by overriding your thermostat. If you wish to permanently unenroll, you can contact your thermostat provider, or call our Energy Information Center at (888) 431-2226.
 

Why is SoCalGas implementing this program?

Every winter the demand for natural gas increases as customers heat their homes. In colder months, customers use three to seven times more natural gas compared to warmer months. That’s why we are asking our customers to work together to help conserve natural gas on days of peak usage.

The SoCalGas Smart Therm Program is funded by California utility customers and administered by SoCalGas under the auspices of the California Public Utilities Commission.

2For purposes of this program, an “active Advanced Meter” is one that has been installed at a customer’s residence by SoCalGas, and that has been validated and activated for natural gas usage measurement and billing purposes by SoCalGas.
