We’re not just SoCalGas, we’re your neighbors. The safety of our employees, customers, contractors, and the public is fundamental to who we are.

We work around the clock to provide our customers and communities with safe and reliable service. This includes our employees regularly performing pipeline maintenance, safety inspections, and repairs, which may be scheduled or unscheduled. To perform these critical tasks, SoCalGas employees require secure access to customer property, including clear pathways to natural gas meters and pipelines.

Safe access starts with identifying SoCalGas employees by looking for:

  • Branded vehicles
  • SoCalGas uniforms with the company logo
  • A current, clear SoCalGas photo identification badge that you can request to see anytime

SoCalGas works with authorized contractors who may not drive branded vehicles or wear branded uniforms, but they are required to carry an official photo identification badge that verifies their affiliation with SoCalGas. If someone claims to be a SoCalGas authorized contractor, ask for their identification badge or call us at 1-800-427-2200 to verify.

Why We Could Be in Your Area

Does SoCalGas Have a Right to Be on My Property?

To provide safe and reliable service, our employees may require access to SoCalGas's natural gas meters, equipment, and pipelines located on your property. SoCalGas strives to provide its customers with advanced notice of work on or near their property that may require employee access. However, this work may need to be performed at any time without prior notice, in accordance with Tariff Rules 13, 21, and 25, as approved by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).

Rule 13 states, “All meters, regulators, service pipe, equipment, fixtures, etc., installed by the Utility on the customer's premises for the purpose of delivering gas to the customer, with the exception of pipe installed by the Utility beyond the meter, shall continue to be the property of the Utility and may be repaired or replaced by the Utility at any time." Rule 21 states that SoCalGas "shall at all times have the right to enter and leave Applicant's Premises for any purpose connected with the furnishing of gas service." And Rule 25 states that SoCalGas has "the right of ingress to and egress from the customer's premises at all reasonable hours for any purpose reasonably connected with the furnishing of gas." Awareness Makes Us Safer Together!

Utility Scams

There has been an increase in utility scams, with impostors posing as utility workers to gain access to customers’ homes and valuables. Some of these individuals wear hard hats or reflective vests to appear authentic and may threaten utility shutoffs unless immediate payment is made.

We encourage customers to remain vigilant about utility scams and to question anyone who presents themselves as a representative of SoCalGas. If someone arrives at your property claiming to be from SoCalGas, consider the following:

  • SoCalGas occasionally performs routine maintenance and company-generated work that requires employee access to customer properties, including safety inspections. This work may occur without prior notice. However, all SoCalGas employees are required to carry an official SoCalGas photo identification badge, which you can request to see at any time. Most authorized SoCalGas employees also drive branded company vehicles and wear branded uniforms with a SoCalGas company logo
  • A SoCalGas employee typically visits a customer’s home in response to a specific service request. In some cases, you may receive a text message, email, call, or mailed letter informing you about work in your area. If you’re not expecting a service visit and someone asks to enter your home, call us first. To verify the authenticity of anyone claiming to be a SoCalGas representative, ask for a SoCalGas identification badge or call us at 1-800-427-2200.

Dog Safety

We love dogs as much as you do, but even friendly dogs can become aggressive when protecting their owners and home. That’s why it’s important to secure your dog whenever a SoCalGas employee is working on or around the premises and to follow dog safety guidelines to help keep our employees safe.
