Pipeline Integrity Projects

To get natural gas safely from California producers to you, we put significant resources towards improving the safety and integrity of our more than 101,000 miles of natural gas pipelines. The Pipeline Integrity Program (PIP) provides oversight guidelines for the systems, procedures, and practices that impact the safety and integrity management of the Department of Transportation defined transmission pipelines.
Know that the integrity of the pipeline systems that bring natural gas to homes or businesses is under careful surveillance. We’re doing our part to ensure the integrity of pipelines and will respond quickly to address issues that are identified during regular inspections, surveys, maintenance and patrols.
These are some of the processes and projects we are currently using to enhance our system:
Robotic In-Line Inspections
The robotic “PIG” (Pipeline Instrument Gauge) is a method of internally inspecting natural gas pipelines. The PIG measures pipe density while identifying possible anomalies.
Corrosion Control
Pipeline coatings prevent corrosive elements from coming into contact with the surface of the pipeline. Cathodic protection systems protect the steel by using direct electrical current to counteract the normal external corrosion of a metal pipeline.
Pipeline Replacement
Sometimes natural gas pipelines need to be replaced to meet expanding customer and/or natural gas system needs as well as to accommodate infrastructure improvement projects of cities, counties and state agencies.
A pipeline replacement project can be a significant construction operation. Typically, the new pipeline segment is installed adjacent to the existing pipeline, which allows the construction work to proceed without stopping the flow of natural gas through the original pipeline.
Valve Upgrade and Replacement
Pipeline valves are one of the key safety components involved in the testing, maintenance and everyday operational activities of our natural gas pipeline. Valves are mechanical devices that control the flow of natural gas through our pipelines.
